Topic:  Gamification: Using Game Design Principles to Engage Customers and Staff

With: Catherine Aurelio, Senior UX/UI Designer, Apigee

"How do we really engage staff in our new support initiative?"

"Customers are used to calling us--how do we get them to explore other options?"

"We're a business, sure...is it too much to ask that we have some fun, too?"

Gamification expert Catherine Aurelio addresses these questions and more as she discusses how game design principles can be used to effectively engage audiences and achieve long-term, sustainable results in Support and beyond.

Catherine will explain the core principles of gamification from a user experience and program design perspective.  She'll show how the same dynamics that have made 183 million Americans active gamers can create more engaging online experiences.  People spend over 30 million hours self-organizing into teams to take on difficult missions in just one game, World of Warcraft...and they do it for free.  What if we could get them to apply the same passion to work?

The talk will include a comparison of current tools, a few examples of Gamification gone right, and references that will help you learn more about Gamification and how you can make it work for your audiences.  Bring your questions...but leave your projector at home.  Catherine's talk is, as always with Third Tuesday, highly interactive and PowerPoint-free.

Catherine Aurelio is Senior User Experience Designer at Apigee and has been a long-time gamification consultant.  She's a highly-rated speaker at TEDxSanta Cruz and a resident of Santa Cruz.
